Town Creek Indian Mound has been the constant focus of North Carolina archaeologists for more than a half-century. The work here uncovered a vastly unique culture that was not like any other Native American culture of North Carolina. The Pee Dee Indians were of South Appalachian Mississippian societies that were more common between South Carolina and Georgia. Town Creek Indian Mound is located in Montgomery County, North Carolina. This small town is often overlooked. Town Creek can be viewed as a hidden gem of sorts. Many archaeological sites are under investigation for a couple of years before the archaeologists move on to a new location, although this has not been the case for Town Creek Indian Mound. The site remains the only state historic site in North Carolina dedicated to American Indian heritage (Ferguson, 1995).
